China Machado aka Noelie Dasouza Machado was a fashion model who became the first non-white model to be featured in any of the major American fashion magazines, that being the Harper’s Bazaar issue of February 1959. She was born in Shanghai in 1929 to a to a Chinese mother and Portuguese father. China was discovered in Paris and hired by Hubert de Givenchy himself! She stayed active in the fashion world her whole life, and also did some work as an editor and television producer. China ascended from our mortal world and took her beauty to heaven in 2016, at the age of 86.
