Moving to Germany she became acquainted with German film personalities, including Marlene Dietrich and actress-filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. She learned both German and French. Anna May developed a very European flavor to her personality.

While in Europe Anna May started to become a star. According to her biographer Graham Russell Gao Hodges, Anna May became part of “an intellectual elite that included princes, playwrights, artists and photographers who clamored to work with her.” Anna May was featured in magazines all over the world. She became a media superstar. Her coiffure and complexion were copied, while “coolie coats” became the rage. Europe loved Anna May Wong and everything about her.

Her first talkie was Road to Dishonour (1930). As opposed to many actors and actresses at that time, Anna May had little or no issues converting from silent film to sound. She had a fantastic voice and spoke with various accents as she needed.

Paramount Pictures offered her a contract, so Anna May moved back to States in 1930. She immediately appeared on Broadway in the play “On the Spot.” It became a huge hit, running for 167 performances. From there she moved on to Hollywood and Paramount, where she starred in an adaptation of Sax Rohmer’s novel “Daughter of Fu Manchu” called Daughter of the Dragon (1931).

Even though Daughter of the Dragon put Anna May into stereotype as ultimate “Dragon Lady,” and was considered a B-movie, she was able to show off an amazing performance. A must see movie for all Anna May Wong fans. She starred with Swede Warner Oland, the future Charlie Chan.

I must admit, I get onto Anna May Wong kicks every so often. Currently I am on a lobby kick with Fundamental Films in China, ( https://www.fundamentalfilms.cn/ ) to pull their Anna May Wong biopic, Dragon Lady, out of cold storage. I’m figuring with current success of Crazy Rich Asians, now is a good time to get it into full production.

My most recent kick involved her grave in Los Angeles. It is basically, unmarked. My first reaction was, “What the hell?” I felt she should at least have a memorial of her own, even though she’s buried next to her sister and mother. (She was cremated.) So I went on a campaign with a couple friends. I sent a number of e mails to Rosedale Cemetery in downtown LA, with no response. I then started calling them, which after a few calls I got a response. Ended up the lady who called me once worked at the same Los Angeles department store chain I worked at as a buyer back in the 70′s. After a nice chat she informed me that Anna May herself requested no memorial and wanted to be very low key. As I pondered this after I hung up, it made perfect sense to me. That is the way Anna May thought.
