Meet Maggie Lieu. Maggie Lieu is not a model. She is not an actress. She is (probably) not a musician, chef, comedian, or artist. Maggie Lieu is an astrophysicist that is on the shortlist to be one of the first people sent to colonize Mars. At 24 years old, she is also one of the youngest, most intelligent candidates available, and her goal is to have the first ever baby on mars, which means that all of the remaining male candidates are praying she gets picked.
On a more serious note, I wanted to take a moment to discuss Nina Pham and offer our readers an opportunity to give their well wishes. Nina Pham is one of two nurses who contracted the deadly virus Ebola while caring for Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who passed away on October 8th, was the first patient in the United States to be diagnosed with the virus on September 30th. Nina Pham, the brave 26 year old Vietnamese nurse from Fort Worth, Texas who as of the time I’m writing this, is currently in fair condition and has been transported to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland after spending the last few days in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian.
I want to wish Nina a speedy recovery from this disease. My thoughts and prayers go out to her, her family, as well as to Amber Joy Vinson, who is the second nurse that contracted Ebola after treating Mr. Duncan. This incident also raises concerns about how we’re handling those traveling from countries with deadly disease outbreaks and the monitoring of those who may care for them.
