Newscasters/Reporters

To start off 2015′s Throwback Thursday posts, here a gem from May of 1980 featuring a then-33 year-old Connie Chung, delivering stories on a couple of long-forgotten names in the news. Connie occupied the KNXT Channel 2 in Los Angeles (now KCBS) anchor chair from 1976-1983. The station’s news anchor alumni includes many recognizable names, including Connie’s now-husband who currently hosts a successful trash TV talk show.

Connie is often credited for paving the way for a lot of Asian-American news journalists since she began her career back in the early 70s, as a correspondent for the CBS Evening News, then anchored by the iconic Walter Cronkite. A few of her more notable interviews were with Claus von Bülow, Magic Johnson, and Martina Navratilova. Probably her best (but not fondly) remembered pairing was with Dan Rather when they did the CBS Evening News together from 1993-1995. Her most infamous stunt was her farewell to her and her hubby’s short-lived 2006 talk show, when she “sang” a lyrically-altered version of “Thanks for the Memory” in an evening gown.

Even though the amply-endowed Chloe is dubbed as a breast guest anchor in Naked News’ video archives, the above video from a few years ago (her one and only for the program) is actually an audition and was never a segment of a regular Naked News show.

Why she wasn’t chosen to be a permanent bare broadcaster on “the program with nothing to hide,” probably had to do with her delivery or slight accent, because, given the physical assets Chloe possessed, they she surely would have been a viewer favorite. For those interested, the ladies introducing Chloe at the beginning of this video are very popular Naked News anchors, Rachelle Wilde and Peyton Priestly.

Unlike the other Naked Newscaster hopefuls who’ve been featured here previously, Carli Bei was eventually chosen to be a permanent member of the “program with nothing to hide.” As Whitney St. John says here during her stripping introduction, Carli first auditioned for Naked News in 2011 but didn’t quite make the cut back then.

Even though Whitney doesn’t say exactly what it is Carli has now that she didn’t seem to have in 2011, Miss Bei was recently selected to be the third Asian lady to permanently join the Naked News team. As of this writing, Carli’s profile is not yet featured at Naked News’ official site, but you can learn more about her from the exclusive interview she recently did with Eyestrain.com.

August 2014 Edit: Eyestrane.com was recently and permanently shut down but Carli’s interview can now be seen at Idol Features, where it’s been republished with Carli’s blessing.

December 2014 Edit: Check out my recent interview with Carli at Amped Asia.

Unlike Melanie and Feya, the other two Asian ladies who’ve auditioned for “the program with nothing to hide” and have been previously featured here, Shannon (above, breezing through her audition from a few years back) speaks perfect, unaccented English. In fact, she even sounds sultry while she delivers the “In Focus” look at Brooke Burke and afterwards during her brief (but clothed) interview. Despite that, she also wasn’t chosen to be a nude anchorwoman for Toronto-based Naked News. Go figure.

As mentioned here before, to date, Lily Kwan and Yukiko Kimura (both apparently no longer with the show) have been the most notable Asian ladies to have been Naked News anchorwomen. However, they haven’t been the only Asian ladies to have auditioned to become in-the-buff broadcasters.

A few other Asian hopefuls have tried out for the nude news team but just didn’t make the cut. One of whom was Feya, who, despite her cute looks and warm personality, had a thick accent that might have been a little too thick for some to get past, such as Whitney St. John, who mentions it as she and Peyton Priestly introduce Feya’s above audition video from a few years back.

Some of the suggestions that come in via the Suggest Post can prove difficult to fit into the normal format despite their obvious merits, so this suggestion by Bubalabobo is a step away from the usual, but hopefully you can work with me…

To date, the most notable Asian ladies who’ve made it as Naked Newscasters on the original ”program with nothing to hide,” have been Lily Kwan and Yukiko Kimura (featured at the old site here and here, respectively). However, that doesn’t mean they were the only two Toronto area (where the show is based) Asian ladies who’ve been willing to bare all while delivering the latest reports from around the world and around the country. There have been a few Asian hopefuls who just didn’t have what it takes to be an in-the-buff broadcaster, such as “Melanie” here.

In her above audition video from a few years back, you can see how Melanie, while certainly not appearing shy, awkwardly reads the “In Focus” spot on Pamela Anderson, in a moderate Chinese accent. Not surprising since, during the brief post-news-reading interview, she mentions she speaks Mandarin, Cantonese ..and French ….and English, which is obviously not her first, and maybe not even second, language. Even though she didn’t make the cut to become a professional nude newsreader, she’s not a bad dancer and she did achieve some success in other endeavours before the camera under a couple of her aliases.

(Video removed from Youtube)

As many of you might already know, a rookie North Dakota news anchor was fired last month, right after preceding the opening to his very first news broadcast with some profanity. (Story here) If you saw it, you may not have paid as much attention to his gaffe as you did Van Tieu; his pretty co-anchor who introduced him and maintained her composure during the awkward on-air moments.

Since Van is the lead anchor of KFYR’s evening news, she was given the task of apologizing to the viewers for her former and very-short-lived co-anchor’s blunder. The above is her doing so at the opening of that evening’s 10:00 PM newscast, which she handled solo. I don’t think they would have been the next Rather-Chung, anyway.

November 8, 2013 Edit: Not surprisingly, the above video was removed from Youtube but this original article with the video, can be viewed here.
