I suspect their modesty comes from traditional Asian family values, not religion—South Korea is one of the most atheist countries on earth.

I don’t think they are an “atheist” country. And the funny thing is I have a particular interest in Korea and chat with a handful of women there….most of them attend church regularly……interesting.

There’s a lot of conflicting data on this: for example, most of the Scandinavian countries have a state-sanctioned church that most of the population officially belong to, yet they are well known for their overwhelmingly atheist beliefs (or rather, lack of belief). However you slice the numbers though, I don’t think South Korea is any more conservative than most other Asian countries, and westernisation has led them to become less so (e.g. China). So I still think it’s just traditional values.

I get the impression there is less South Korean porn than other Asian countries, not that it has anything to do with religion but it might reflect conservative values.

I agree, I don’t think it’s religious, but rather culturally it is a deeply Confucian society, historically. It’s in their DNA, if not outwardly obvious socially. As the country has modernized over the 50 years it has been tempered, but it is still a deeply rooted part of Korean society.

Agreed. All I see are either (1) those strange “Korean Model Scandal” videos involving a ‘hidden’ camera in a love hotel and some yawn-inducing play, or (2) those video DJ (or whatever they are called) girls doing the webcam chats/stripteases–the latter should be a post itself, with that hottie Park Ni Ma. Some pro porn might be a nice change tho.

Luke does make an interesting point re porn. I still don’t think it’s related to Christianity, but it is very curious nonetheless. I get the impression that the never actually ended Korean war imposes a kind of seriousness upon them, as if there’s no space for frivolities. I think it’s also related to their extraordinarily rapid economic succession, and the very high youth suicide rate—there’s enormous pressure to be a high performer, and the conflict between traditional values and modern ones creates problems for scantily clad K-pop starlets in particular. K-pop itself is I think a kind of rebellion against this austerity.

#6, #8 and #10 are my favs.Interesting reading about korean values. I perceive their society as very closed to the outside, they seem to live in a world of their own and be fine about it. Of course, economically they have reached for other markets, specially the industry giants like Samsung, Hyundai, etc. But from an outsider point of view, they just don’t seem to get “along” with the rest of the world. Seems like they could live isolated from everyone else and still be happy on their own. Am I the only one to think like that?
