Throwback Thursday – Helen Selby for L’eggs Sheer Elegance

The above 1981 TV commercial for L’eggs Sheer Elegance pantyhose (back when they came in the plastic “eggs”) features little-known actress and model, Helen Selby. Besides doing commercials for L’eggs (the one that aired the year after this one would probably be deemed even more racist by today’s media standards) and a few other products, she appeared in a 1988 episode of Cosby entitled “Bookworm” and then seems to have just disappeared from the public eye. She now resides in the “Whatever Happened to..? file.

I thought I might remember the commercial, but alas not. She’s got beautiful legs, explaining the sensible casting. That, and she’s “Oriental”… ;-)

These Throwbacks are good–you come up with some old gems.

    My thoughts exactly.

Those are some very nice legs….

Interesting to see how Asians/Orientals are portrayed in commercials through the years…..not long ago we had the tag line “Ancient Chinese Secret, huh?” from Anne Miyamoto- who was actually of Japanese background!

I see commercials now-a-days with Asian actresses just filling in the role- meaning their “Asian-ness” is not required…they are just an actress. Interestingly, I watch those commercials from start to finish. I buy the products too. Even for stuff I’ll never need. I am so weak, lol. Don’t judge me.

Me to Frenchy is sad but true. Even programs on tv, throw in a hot asian woman and I’m hooked.

No worries; you’re in the company of friends, French. No judging…as long as you don’t actually wear the pantyhose you bought ;-)

Very nice and I have a thing for those blunt bangs also along with her Legg’s.

I have heard that Helen is from Hawaii, modelled and married a Hollywood screen writer and is now a middle aged but still very attractive woman…

    Olrik,

    That sounds entirely feasible :)

    Luke,

Yes, besides L’eggs I heard she also modeled for Calvin Klein, Bill Blass, other big fashion houses, Japan Airlines, Oil of Olay, Clairol, etc., but I guess it’s hard to find examples of that work now. She was supposed to be the first Asian used in an American advertising campaign after the Vietnam War which had a very negative effect on Asians in our media. Before the script writer she was married to a British photographer…

Guess we know what happened to her career after that episode of the Cosby show now.
