Nina Davuluri

Nina Davuluri is one girl that has been sitting in the Suggest/Submit Your Own Post for way too long, apologies French and thankyou for your fine suggestion.

Nina was voted Miss America 2013 and is the second Miss America with Asian heritage—both her parents have an Indian background. She was in a marching band, a cheerleader, played tennis, was on the Science Olympiad team and can also Bollywood dance as evidenced in her Miss America performance—a beautiful and multi talented lady. :)

Indian women seem to be popular in beauty pageants (certainly much more than other Asian women), but I’m not sure why—for me this girl is nowhere near as attractive as the sorts of girls we usually feature here, or even many caucasian women (I thought the runner-up blew her away). Does anyone know why they seem to do so well in these pageants relative to other Asian women?

Good question, Doc. I find some Indian women very sexy. In Nina’s case, her face is quite pretty, IMO, but she certainly is a bit bigger in the lower body than I prefer. I’m just guessing here, but perhaps it is because beautiful Indian women tend to have a very classy look, while at the same time their features are more familiar, or not as “foreign” looking compared to women from southeast Asia. That’s a very clumsy of describing it, but I think you know what I mean.

The zebra bikini shot isn’t too flattering but I think she’s beautiful.

What I’d like to know is why in the Miss Universe pageant in particular there are rarely any number of Asians in the top spots but I’ll be damned if at least half of the spots aren’t Central and South American.

She has beautiful face and looks quite classy, but I think her body doesn’t quite come together right. I remember watching and thinking he didn’t wear a good swimsuit.

I am such an idiot I just can’t pass this one up. Compare her to Aishwarya Rai. Are you kidding me???

Yes, I know India is part of Asia, but I do not consider those from the India and Pakistan and such as Asian. The “look” is just not the same.

I hope I am not stepping on anyone’s toes by saying something remotely negative.

    LoveAsianWomen,

    Your comment is perfectly fine.

Indians are just as Asian as anyone else from Asia—indeed, in the UK when they say “Asian”, they mean from the Indian subcontinent (what Americans call “Asian” they call “Oriental”). This is why I think the name of this site is somewhat unfortunate: it really should be “Oriental Sirens”, as it is far more precise and accurate. But of course, Asian Americans find the term “Oriental” offensive.

    LoveAsianWomen,

Actually there are a lot of women from the USSR and nearby countries that look Asian or mixed that would be great additions here IMO but I have always felt that it was stretching the boundaries.

I guess if it were up for a vote I would lean towards a more inclusive policy, but I like attractive women no matter what their heritage.

As for Miss Davaluri I did prefer Crystal Lee. There is a large population of people from the sub-continent where I live, many who are stunning and who I would consider prettier but I think to be a Miss Universe requires other attributes like self confidence etc that she looks to have in spades.

She is lovely and quite refined. Asia is indeed a very large place with many wonderful sirens. On this one I will pass.

Agree with Dr. Lee- I too thought that Crystal Lee (the runner up) should have been the winner, although I find Ms. Davuluri here very attractive. May have been my bias as Crystal has a slight cross-eye thing going on which makes me CRAZY in a good way! Like an Aussie accent.

What I found nice was that the top two winners in the USA were not cookie-cutter blondes. They were well-educated, confident, strong women.

As for “who is Asian”- Some government descriptions in the USA classify Indians as Asian, some as “Indian/Pakistani” (which is very rude); and some Asian groups further classify themselves as Southeast Asian.

Agree with Luke- there are women (just featured) from Kyrgyzstan and other nearby countries that could easily pass for Chinese.

Agree with LoveAsianWomen- I worked with a fellow of Indian background who was the spitting image of Cary Grant- a movie star from back in the day. If Grant had a tan, he would have been this guy. Women were all over him when he wore a suit- he could not understand it until I Googled an image of Cary Grant for him….he still thanks me to this day because he wears nothing but suits now (just like Cary Grant).

Dr. Lee: I will never forget that discussion a while back on the term “Oriental”. You are so right- if I say “Oriental” in the USA, I get yelled at.

i like neither of them… i usually like indian women but this one is not for me.

Luke, central asian women are, well, from the centre of asia! they have well deserved room for being featured here. but i don’t think kyrgyz look like chinese… at all.. French you need to meet more of them ;) central asian girls are beautiful but in their very own, peculiar way…

I too love slightly cross-eyed Asian girls (it only looks good on them though). I know a girl who looks almost exactly like Crystal, but would you believe even cuter? 8O

    Doc: I am so there!

gunnar: I know, but because of invasions, trade, migration, and travel, you get these “outliers” that live in one country, but could pass for being from another. And I am more than willing to meet more/all of them :) ! Sign me up!
