Thailand: A different missionary position

image

Two evenings a week, members of Nightlight Ministries visit the seedy hostess and go-go bars of Bangkok's infamous multi-story Nana Entertainment Plaza. Unlike other customers, they are not there to drink beer, gaze at scantily-clad dancers writhing around chrome poles, or to take one of the women back to a hotel.

Instead, their aim is to bring prostitutes "to Jesus Christ," according to the group's Website. "Nightlight's vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness," the group says.

Nightlight's American founder and director Annie Dieselberg, 43, says she has never encountered more evil than in the sex industry. "It's so dark and so destructive," she says. But her work is also controversial. Full story here.

It's no wonder that so many countries are starting to heavily regulate NGO activities...

It's my experience that the most zealous moral crusaders are hiding and compensating for a lot of inner pain and conflict. All too often they turn out to be themselves excessively depraved! Or there's some financial corruption scandal...

Glad to see there are non-judgmental, non-exploitive orgs such as Empower to counteract the evils of such groups.

Agreed.

Sounds good, since in Thailand there is one foundation who wants to help them and transform them into the good ones.
But we also have to realize that Thailand is a tourism country, means prostitusion still on high demand. It is a very promised industry and very simple and easy to do.

I totally agree with luvjgirls - I've absolutely had enough of religion (particularly Christianity and Islam) imposing their so-called 'moral' standards on rational, secular people. They're always going on about the freedom to practice their religion; what about the freedom to not practice religion?

Ha, i like the picture. I wont get started on the issue at hand though. =)

Posted by: jdrevenge on Aug 31, 07 | 5:03 am

Their aim is to bring prostitutes "to Jesus Christ", huh?
Well, for a couple of thousand baht you can bring those girls almost anywhere else, so why not to Jesus?

I would like to join jd's observation and say:

Nice pooper!

Although I dont agree with the view that those who live the life are in darkness, I am a big fan of the missionary position.

Holy cow! I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Nana back in '89.

Also, here's an entertaining video starring Cathy Shim. In a bikini.

Posted by: Curtis G. on Aug 31, 07 | 7:20 am

ditto on the pooper :) i agree with doc...get your religion out of my heads....both of them eh :)

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 8:59 am

Very entertaining video, Curtis....but what in the world does it have to do with this topic??

Posted by: CEC on Aug 31, 07 | 9:02 am

Yes Curtis, please keep your posts on topic. If you have a topic suggestion, send it to us.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Aug 31, 07 | 9:11 am

do appreciate the hot korean girl video though :) does she get naked?

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 10:12 am

"had enough of religion (particularly Christianity and Islam)" maybe doc is jewish :) you know there is only one way to prove or disprove doc :))

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 10:14 am

Jews tend to be relatively open sexually, and don't seem to feel as much need to impose their "moral values" on others as Christians and Muslims do. I strongly disapprove of what they're doing in the middle east though (particularly Palestine), and I'm a devout(!) atheist myself - thank God. ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Aug 31, 07 | 10:28 am

i know that Jews, Buddhists and Hindus are more open sexually. i was thinking of something else about being Jewish. and btw doc since you are atheist you cant say thank God. :) you have to say thank A Higher Power :))

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 10:36 am

btw..where did Bill get this pix of the Booty school girl...way hot and kinky :)

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 10:37 am

Well, if you use that technique to determine if I'm Jewish, then I am. ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Aug 31, 07 | 11:21 am

Gentlemen, I think in this case we do not need any religions in judgement. The most important is without them, the world will not recognize cry in any longer.
And of course some people very need their apperance.

Posted by: Niners on Aug 31, 07 | 11:44 am

man, i have to get some of what niners is smoking!!!

i thought they dont practice that down under doc..... :))

Posted by: LawBoy on Aug 31, 07 | 6:40 pm

Say what you will and motives could aways be questionable but all in all this doesn't seem to be too bad of a thing. At least they seem to be providing some good services for free. This eesm to be bringing them some of the word without the ridicule and destiny of damnation for a life that they may not be able to to do anything about.

I had a though and a powerful image in my mind that I'll never be able to photograph or paint. That came from the though of the sinner who's sins are tied to the way or who they are and the church that gives them no salvation. They want to belong they want to be ritegous but they can not, according to the church, because of nothing more than their existance.

Now without going into the deep ends of religion. I think thats wholefully wrong and one of the main places that man made and dictated religions go wrong. They'll tell you that God is forgiving, that he loves you and that you sins can be washed away, but they themselves will turn you away.

I have found that sending topic suggestions is generally pointless. This way at least someone sees it.

Posted by: Curtis G. on Sep 02, 07 | 3:27 am

I saw it. I am now a huge fan of Cathy Shim's boobs.

Posted by: arf on Sep 02, 07 | 6:55 am

And face.

Posted by: arf on Sep 02, 07 | 6:55 am

I agree it's good to give the bar girls some alternative. Then it's up to them, to see if they take up the offer.

But not good to impose some religious condition. That's the wrong part in it.

Posted by: daznlover on Sep 03, 07 | 12:03 am

Lawboy, they should be practised first before go to work. In that so, they can delight their customers.

Posted by: Niners on Sep 03, 07 | 3:32 am

that's a hot photo, can we get one of including her face too?

Posted by: steviewong on Sep 11, 07 | 8:44 am

Dr Lee..what do you mean Jews (Jewish People) How can you say Jews are more open sexually....What does that have to do with Palestine....Do you mean people from Isreal are more open....or American Jewish people...or European Jewish People, or Irish Jewish People.....
Christians and Muslims were Jewish before they were Christian or Muslim, so you think the break was over sexuality

Posted by: GeneralLi on Sep 17, 07 | 5:59 am

Um, yes, Gen Li, Jews (by which I mostly mean of Israel/Euro/US) are more open and accepting of sexuality, more aligned with Hindus & Buddhists in that respect. If you look at the sheer numbers of sex researchers, sex therapists, erotic art creators, and porn creators (lol), you will find a staggering amount are Jews. And Gen Li, the Jewish People are not just a religion but a culture. Hence the ability to make these general statements about them that you maybe could not do about, say, Protestants. And you will also find, like Hindus, no missionaries.

Posted by: luvjgirls on Sep 17, 07 | 6:50 am

Agreed with luvjgirls on all counts - I don't think it's any coincidence that it was Seinfeld that dared to devote an entire episode to masturbation. ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Sep 17, 07 | 10:17 am

Thanks...not to mention all the Jewish jokes about sex and the humorists who proffer them!
