Yasuzō Nojima (野島康三, 1889-1964) was a Japanese photographer, particularly well known for his unidealized nudes of “ordinary” Japanese women executed in both pictorialist and modernist styles.

Nojima began studying at Keio University in 1906, and began taking photographs two years later. From 1915 to 1920 he ran a gallery, the Misaka Photo Shop, where he had his first solo exhibition in 1920. Around that same time he opened the Kabutoya Gado gallery, which was connected to the shirakaba-ha literary movement.

Nojima was instrumental in raising photography’s status as a fine art in Japan in the 1930s. He published the periodical Koga in 1932. The magazine was the first devoted to modern photography in Japan and the first to present Japanese photographers to the rest of the world.

Nojima introduced a new photographic aesthetic to Japan, one that concentrated on the technical and aesthetic qualities of photography in its own right rather than as an imitation of paintings.

Nojima’s early works, which were gum-dichromate prints, had a soft focus with a pictorial vision. His later still lifes and nudes, though still soft, were striking in their simple and direct forms.

Nojima wrote, in 1927,”When I take a portrait I move the subject towards a point where the light is adequate. Then I evaluate the quality of the light, the shadows and forms. When I am satisfied, I shoot. I am not interested in capturing the personality of the model or in revealing her peculiarities. I shoot in tune with my perception of light and form: these are the elements that interest me”.
