Throwback Thursday – Kelly Hu in Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

Serial killer Jason Voorhees has never been a discriminating slayer, but to date, his only Asian female victim has been Eva Watanabe (played by a then-unknown 21-year-old Kelly Hu, first featured at the old site here) in 1989′s Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. As you can see from the above scene, Eva’s death sure wasn’t merciful, but at least it was “splatter-free.”

Have always like Kelly Hu myself

I didn’t remember this, but I do remember her from Scorpion King etc. She’s a total fox. She has an exotic, mixed race look, which is partly why I think she’s been so popular as an actress.

Great selection, her fight scenes in x2 are legendary.

Crap. I am old. She was spectacular in Scorpion King.

I’ve long loved watching Kelly Hu, from Nash Bridges (in which, unfortunately, her character was killed off) to Martial Law (she got to speak Chinese in that one) to Scorpion King (where she gave us a titillating flash of her nether regions as she mounted The Rock). I even watched a few episodes of that terrible series, The 100, just to see her.

This role, however, is another fine (read: horrible) example of Hollywood’s knack for cross-ethnic casting. Why is it so hard for them to tailor the role to the ethnicity of the actor? Why couldn’t they rename Eva Watanabe to Eva Wang (or any other Chinese surname) when they cast a Chinese actress?

Of course, I guess I’m asking too much of the production staff of a Friday the 13th movie, huh?
