Yang Liping

When Asian Sirens was first re-launched as a blog back in 2005, one of my first feature articles was Yang Liping. This was because of my enormous admiration for her—not just for her beauty (especially for her age), but most importantly for her unequalled artistic talent. IMHO, when it comes to dance, there’s Yang Liping, then there’s everybody else. And it seems I’m not the only one who feels this way, as an entire new generation of Chinese dancers have followed her example. I don’t really have anything to add to the text of my original article (apart from the sad news of her recent retirement), but I do have a lot to add in terms of pictures and—most importantly—videos, which simply weren’t available back then.

Sexuality and eroticism is a common theme in her dance—here’s Two Trees:

And here she is with the girl she is grooming as her successor, in Spring:

Finally, here’s the Moon shadow dance, showing off her extraordinary fluidity:

I can’t say I’m a fan of dance as an art form, but these performances by Yang Liping are simply breathtaking. The silhouette shapes she forms in her Moon dance are extraordinary! I really appreciate this post, Doc. Damn right, she’s a siren – there’s a seductiveness in her moves that’s irresistible!

    taipan,

I’m with you—I’ve never really been into dance either. But Yang Liping completely redefines the art form, turning it into something utterly compelling and, as you say, absolutely breathtaking—and damn seductive too. ;)
