Hikaru Utada 宇多田 ヒカル

John Smith asked us to feature the singer Hikaru Utada. A search of our archives turned up a result, but it was actually only a reference, so belatedly here she is.

Because I can’t word it any better, I have copied this brief career history from J-Pop World:

Hikaru Utada is an international singing superstar. She has sold more than 41 millions records and scored a full dozen #1 hits on the Oricon chart ratings. She considers both New York and Tokyo to be her home and is commonly known as “Hikki” to her Japanese fans and “Utada” to her Western fans.

You can read more here.

After being on an hiatus since 2010, it appears Utada may be making a comeback in 2015, with the possibility of a new soundtrack for the next Neon Genesis Evangelion instalment, due for release by the end of the year.

    adcmelb,

    Yes, I’ve been working through the suggestions (happy to say they are all pretty much in the line) and there is a really interesting variety and some excellent choices!

    @gunnar
    strangely enough the reverse for me. music and voice pretty indifferent but looks have a mystique.

    Looks-wise just average for me..
    Music-wise…”you’re easy breezy I’m Japanesey.” ‘Nuff said.

    She’s pretty, and according to her Easy Breezy video, she digs white guys, and faults herself as “Japan-easy” for hooking up with a guy that turns around and dumps her…. What’s not to like about that?…

    Actually that line (Japan-easy) got me reading more about her that I planned, but I was a bit surprised that was what it said–I figured it would have been thought insensitive (see the Lisa Chan post above), but Utada is from New York and this was her first US album, so it’s not like she wouldn’t have known… I think it’s just because it was 2004 and folks were less touchy about this type of thing. Also it apparently it might not have gotten as much attention as her releases got in Japan. I just think it’s a funny line, but was surprised it “got through.”

    Anyway, I’m all for Japan-easy girls ;-)

    She reminded me of another Japanese signer Gille, I’ll put a suggestion in for her.

    Very attractive and quite a talented singer. Does she have any albums in English?
