Fixes, Improvements and a Banner Comp

Since re-launching Asian Sirens in its present form nearly a year ago, a few minor, niggling issues have remained. Well actually, one of these wasn’t so minor for mobile users: the inability to post comments. Unfortunately, all the WordPress mobile themes I knew of were seriously buggy in one way or another, so I’ve spent many months chasing up the developers of the various plug-ins I tried to get them fixed, but with virtually no success. But then I finally found one that actually works properly, so now mobile users can finally post comments! 2014/07/21 Update: Since this post, I’ve been working on a customised version of WordPress’ Minileven mobile theme, which finally gives mobile users feature parity with desktop users!

I’ve also made some changes to better accommodate how you are using the site: people were constantly getting the submit post and suggest post pages mixed up, so I’ve merged them (and culled the fulfilled requests in the process). Conversely, I’ve added an Already Identified page to the Request ID page, to make it easier to keep track of who has been identified and who hasn’t. And finally, I’ve added a Member Image Uploads page, to make it easier to keep track of all the images members have uploaded to their profiles (their images will only appear here if they’ve allowed comments on them though).

It does appear as though the backend features of the site are currently under-utilised: for example, not many people are commenting on the image uploads, or using the Favorites feature to store their favourite posts for easy access. I also would have expected more Featured Profile uploads by now. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get people to use these features without messing up the blog?

While we’re on the subject of user feedback, one other thing I haven’t been entirely satisfied with is our current site banner—I just whipped it up quickly to get the site launched as soon as possible. So I thought I might ask our readers to try and come up with a better design, in widths of 728 and 312 pixels. It has to have our name (of course) and motto “Discover and Discuss Beautiful Asian Women”, but apart from that, you’re free to design whatever you choose. Unfortunately I don’t have any prizes to offer, apart from the glory of creating the branding for our great site. :)

    smellykev,

So that’s why you’ve been so quiet lately! Good to know you can make your, shall we say, somewhat offbeat contributions to our site again. :)

Doc, thanks for the continuing improvements. I wasn’t even really aware of the Profiles feature. Commenting via mobile will be nice. The Already Identified post is a great idea, since it’s interesting to see the lead and solutions. Maybe some basic analytics could be tried, for example most IDs, which clearly belongs to CEC; most posts, most read, and perhaps favorite comments (but that would require a thumbs up/down type component).

It would be easy to add such features, but I’ve never really liked them myself: I want to give everything on the site an equal chance, so to speak, but this kind of thing gives already popular posts a huge advantage. What do others think of this?

I don’t mind the idea of ‘likes’ but I wonder if it means people don’t put in a full comment which is better IMO.
I must admit I tried favouriting a couple of posts but really mainly focus on the daily activity. I wonder if there were more discussion threads or posts if that would be a more used function. I tend to go to ‘view all comments’ and navigate that way.
I have enjoyed the profiles that have been entered into the featured profile area. I imagine it is built to aid models and photographers etc. It would be good if you could show some link to work opportunities. I recall Tony mentioning seeing a model here and then organising a shoot. I think that may encourage people to enter a profile or more importantly some pics.
Will the banner replace the Sakura Live bit or appear underneath?

Well, I was able to post on my mobile device for the past several months. But with this new look, all of the extra information that was on the left side of the web page is gone (such as the categories, latest comments, etc,). Also missing is the previous and next posts listings.

    Rock on

    wingsfan19,

I found the same thing Wings, I did sometimes get the mobile site but I would click ‘view full site’ at the bottom of the page. The same thing goes with this one but the button is a red ‘view desktop version’.

    wingsfan19,

What Luke said—obviously you were getting the full site previously, but you are now getting the mobile version. You should only be getting the mobile version on a mobile phone—what devices are you guys using? I might also change the text to what the old theme said—that was probably clearer.

    chioeve,

I’ve lifted the ban on your account—please don’t spam the comments again, or next time the ban will be permanent. You have a good site that will definitely be of interest to our readers, so it would be a shame if I had to.

I won’t be bothering with ad banners on the mobile site for now, but they will come eventually. As with the main site, they’ll be unobtrusive—no pop-ups etc. I have now changed the switch text to “view full site” and “view mobile site”.

Good to see you are always on top of things, Doc. It is probably a good idea to make some of these lesser known, but very useful, options a bit more prominently featured.

As for likes, most popular, most posts, etc–I’ve never been a fan of that stuff. But it doesn’t have an impact on me in any way, so whatever you do should be fine.

I thought the bland look of this new site was intentional, for some reason. If not a new header, some color sure would be nice. The color scheme of the old site was cool. How about using it here?

    CEC,

The ‘bland’ look (I’d prefer to call it ‘clean’) most certainly is intentional. I just think the banner could be better, although if nobody can come up with anything nicer, I think it’s fine.

I tend to agree, but the question is, how to do it without making things messy?

    Dr. Lee,

Got it:-) I was automatically getting the full site previously, so I didn’t even think to look for that choice this time. I am using the Hisense Zero 7 Pro, and I prefer the full site look. BTW, it’s a great tablet for the money.

Also, just below the view full site selection was one for “Have sex with local women”. Shouldn’t that be ” Have sex with local Asian women”?

  18. Avatar of Guest Poster

    wingsfan19,

I suspect the new theme is interpreting your tablet as an Android phone—I might have to see if I can refine the user agents.

I’ll fix the ad text too. :)

Or maybe, “Have sex with hot local Asian women who aren’t too discriminating and are willing to drive to your place.”

That’s a good point. Don’t want to discourage comments.

Another idea is to sequentially number the pics in some way to ease reference in comments–then we avoid the ‘yellow bikini three from top’ type of references, and the associated counting. Doc has previously pointed out that this might clutter/mess up a clean presentation, which would be a problem. But is there a way to label the pics and have the label visible when you, e.g. hover the cursor over the pic? Something like that. It would facilitate quality commenting.

That’s one of those things that sounds a lot simpler than it actually is, but I’ll see what I can come up with.

  22. Avatar of Luke

    Dr. Lee,

I have thought this for a while, as I’m sure most have. Would a small number under each pic work?

  23. Avatar of Guest Poster

    Luke,

Visible numbers would be unacceptable—they would have to be in the alt tags as Bubalabobo suggests, so you can hover over the image and see the number. To do this, I would have to devise a script that would add it automatically as images are added to the post. However, it would be totally screwed up if the image sequence is changed (or one is removed or added later), so I just don’t think it’s practical.

Once again it sounds simple, but in reality it would be very difficult and problematic.

Oh, they wouldn’t even have to drive to my place; I’d pick them up (so to speak).
